Some of the different ways you can volunteer include;

Driving: driving women and/or women and children to appointments. These appointments may be with doctors, lawyers, to court, to Ontario Works in Oshawa, or to search for Housing, etc. This is very important and needed support as Bethesda House often hasn't the staff to provide this service.

Accompaniment: going with the women and/or women and children to the above mentioned appointments to offer support and encouragement as needed. Specific accompaniment training is provided.

House Cleaning: Helping keep the shelter clean and tidy. This work makes a big difference for the many women and children who come through the shelter. This would include general housekeeping tasks as well as special projects such as organizing the pantry or linen closet, etc.

Repairs & Maintenance: Calling all people who may have specific plumbing, electrical, carpentry and other skills who are willing to be part of an on-call team, to help reduce costs of such services to the shelter.

Donation Pick-Up Drivers: to be available to call to pick up donations, etc.

Gardening &: Yardwork to care for our flowerbeds and cut the lawn, etc.

Child care: periodically, as per your availability, to provide childcare (crafts, group activities, etc.) in the shelter for children while their mothers' attend meetings, group, etc.

Share Special Skills & Interests with Children: periodically, as per your availability, come into the shelter and share your skills/interests with the women and children. Arts, crafts, music, storytelling, reading, play, tutoring, homework, sharing your computer skills, any of these activities would be wonderful ways to offer your time as a volunteer.

Interpretating: to be available on an on-call basis for discussions between the crisis intervention staff and residents during intake sessions, meetings, etc. (All languages needed, including sign language).
•  Also to accompany women to appointments when translation is requested.
•  Also to put information on audiotapes and/or to translate written information.

Self care support: to provide 1:1 attention or groups in the following areas…
